Everything’s Coming Up Pumpkins

The first days of Autumn are adding a chill to the air.  The trees are giving us a glorious show of color, the leaves are beginning to fall, and in the northern areas of the country the frost is on the pumpkin telling us it’s time to take a trip to the farmers markets and roadside stands that are bursting with fall produce.

In additional to the colorful Indian corn, winter squash, crisp apples, Brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes and other traditional fall fruits and vegetables you will find at the markets you can’t help but notice the big orange displays of ripe pumpkins.  If you didn’t know better, you’d think that everything’s coming up pumpkins.  And it is.

Those of us who are gluten-free often miss out on seasonal and holiday foods because they contain wheat flour.  Fortunately, Trader Joe’s has our back.  If you haven’t tried their Baker Josef’s Gluten Free Pumpkin Bread & Muffin Baking Mix you are in for a treat.  Made from sorghum, millet, and brown rice this moist and flavorful pumpkin bread is the perfect complement to an autumn stew, a roaster full of baked beans, or a hearty bowl of chili (see our Classic Beef Chili recipe).

For those who love pancakes Trader Joe’s also has a gluten-free Pumpkin Pancake Mix that is so delicious even the non-gluten-free request these pumpkin pancakes.  This pancake mix is seasonal so stock up now to ensure you have enough through the winter months.

If you are craving a Pumpkin Spice Latte you may be out of luck at Starbucks and other fast food restaurants that feature this popular fall drink.  Most cafes and restaurants are not guaranteeing their Pumpkin Spice Lattes to be gluten-free or even free of gluten-containing ingredients.

But don’t despair.  You can make a Pumpkin Spice Latte for yourself at home.  Gluten Free Living magazine has recipes for the popular pumpkin drinks.  Their recipes call for pumpkin puree from a freshly roasted pumpkin but if you are strapped for time you can substitute the equivalent amount of canned pumpkin.   Be sure to select unflavored canned pumpkin and not the canned ‘pumpkin pie mix’ or you will get too much spice and possibly some gluten too.  The ingredients list will show if the product contains anything other than pumpkin.
